Published polls and social media analysis

Biden’s approval rating has taken a nosedive since August 2021. According to the FiveThirtyEight poll average tracker, his approval stood at 51% on August 2nd. 4 months later, his approval is at 43%. His net approval is historically extremely poor, only his predecessor Donald Trump had a worse net approval rating in December of the first year of the presidency. In an era of extreme polarisation, it is becoming increasingly harder for presidents to get high or low approval ratings.

Reasons for significant drop in approval

While it was expected that Republicans would criticise President Biden come what may, Biden has also lost the confidence of a large number of Independents and some Democrats. There are numerous reasons why the ratings crashed – Handling of Afghanistan crisis, Soaring Inflation, Inability to pass landmark bills are some of the key factors. However, the biggest reason for Biden’s failure is a perceived lack of leadership.

The passage of his extremely popular Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill last month has not stemmed the bleeding. His other signature legislation, dubbed the Build Back Better act is still being held up in the Senate where Democrats cannot afford a single defection in order to pass the bill in a 50-50 tied chamber where Vice President Harris breaks ties. It already passed the House in November although it would need to vote on the bill again if the Senate passes the bill with any changes from the House’s version. The bill also holds majority support but is less popular than the infrastructure bill.

2/3rd of Americans feel the country is on the wrong track, inflation is the highest it’s been this century and gas prices have also increased, which has resulted in citizens accumulating a lower real disposable income this year than during the last year of Trump’s presidency when the Government provided massive stimulus and sent multiple direct cheques to lower and middle income citizens to cushion the economy from the Covid-19 induced recession.

The bounce in approval from a successful vaccine roll-out has also faded as Covid-19 cases in America have now risen more than 400,000 per day again causing Biden’s approval of handling the covid pandemic to drop from 62% on June 2 to 48% on December 2. The new Omicron variant, first detected in Southern Africa risks a new surge in cases, deaths and economic slowdown which could have cause his approval to fall even further in the run up to the 2022 midterm elections where Democrats are expected to lose control of both the house and senate leading to Biden having to negotiate with a Republican Congress from 2023 to 2024 to pass policies.
There are some positives for Biden as inflation has dropped slightly. According to economists, inflation could drop closer to the 3% mark by late 2022, the time of the midterms. Inflation averaged around 6% in October and November 2021. His net approval seems to have hit its nadir in mid November at -10%. It hovers around the -8% mark now
